Aromatherapy is effectively the therapeutic use of essential oils. Its first form can be traced back to burning different woods and the smoke can be used as incense in most cultures. Traditionally the scents of essential oils have been used in Ayurveda as documented in the Vedic texts. The reason why the name derived is ‘essential oils’ is because it extracts the ‘essence’ of the plant in itself. These oils have many wonderful properties including, but not limited to:
• Uplift moods
• Awake innate intelligence
• Relax and Calm us
• Improves basic physiological functions
It is even proven to help those who suffer from mental disorders such as:
To prepare these oils is an extremely labour-intensive process and the quantity of plants to produce these oils is also in high number. For example, approximately 2,000 kilograms of rose petals would produce 1 kg of essential oil, and 4 million jasmine flowers produce a kilogram of jasmine oil. But they are also highly effective. only a few drops are required to achieve the desired effect.
Most of the Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala revolve around these fundamental policies. The Ayurvedic resorts in Kerala, the Ayurveda training courses in Kerala have also adopted the same. The Yoga Center in Kannur has even adopted the Panchakarma Therapy in Kerala.
